Urban regeneration commences with a conceptual update of the city. Shenzhen, known as China’s youngest first-tier city in and a sprawling laboratory for urban experimentation, now stands as an innovative workshop for urban regeneration. However, the prevailing perception of Shenzhen remains akin to a sketch, capturing only the outlines of a modern metropolis while neglecting its pre-reform and opening-up era. The city's trajectory, propelled by rapid development and the relentless dedication of scholars and practitioners, has catalyzed a profound shift in societal perception regarding its urban villages. Once deemed as “urban tumors,“ these urban villages have metamorphosed into “urban organs“, prompting a paradigmatic shift from blind eradication to imaginative and pragmatic regeneration approaches. This book presents a panoramic narrative of Shenzhen and its urban villages, delving into its symbiotic relationship with the global economy of its society, unearthing its lesser-known historical backdrop, and vividly capturing the pulsating vitality of its everyday life. It celebrates the collaborative efforts of individuals across diverse professions, strata, and income brackets, unified in their collective endeavor to forge a brighter future for the city.

Catching the Diverse Narratives of History

Unlike most cities, Shenzhen shapes the present by building upon the illusion of a city without history, even as it creates an origin story based on this illusion. However, beyond the widely known official story, records of the city are complicated, uncertain, vague, and even contradictory. The rapid development of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has produced two juxtaposed urban realities, which simultaneously resist and reinforce each other. These two realities are manifested in the confrontation of the top-down planned city and the bottom-up informal urban villages. This city refuses to be simplified into a single perspective or a single story. Hence the articles of City Files need to include urban villages as coordinates within the city's urbanization process. We attempt to understand the nature of urban villages through praise and critique, speculating and rethinking the spirit of today's urban life.

“Chronology of Shenzhen City and Urban Villages“ (see pamphlet) illustrates the formation and evolution of Shenzhen's formal urban areas and its urban villages with respect to various factors as well as portrays their spatial forms at several turning points. “Informal China II: Resilient Transformation of Urban-Rural Relations in the New Normal“ breaks down the urban phenomenon of formal city and informal village, and discusses the development and impact of their conflicting yet integrated relationship. “Excavating the Future as Imagined in an Urban Village“ analyzes how various futures have been implemented and overlooked in the transformation of urban villages. “Urban Planning Vs. Urban Villages, Who Should Transform Whom?“ describes a shift in perspective from defining urban villages by the means of urban planning to rethinking urban planning through the lens of urban villages. It also further proposes to resolve urban issues and achieve urban ideals by learning from urban villages. “A Literature Review on the Urban Village“ studies the definition of the urban village on multiple scales, thereby identifying specific associations in urban village studies between individual cases and the larger area, part to whole, and local practices to global discourse.

Catalyzing Alternative Urbanism

For decades, the single-minded vision of the modern city has shrouded urban construction, bringing revolutionary changes to the urban landscape and economy while provoking crises of urban homogenization and social differentiation. The diverse, different, hybrid and unyielding urbanity that emerged in urban villages has overcome the blind spots of that single-minded vision. Today, interconnected studies and practices of informal urbanism allow us to revise the single-minded view of history and development, and suggest many possible futures for urban development. These works understand, recognize, utilize, optimize, and influence urban villages which have established communication and interconnectivity between planning and informality, where intervention and endogenous growth have led to a new urban mechanism. The accumulation of such experiences challenges the existing concept of what a city is and provides references for its regeneration.

“City as Biennale, Exhibition Is Action“ elaborated the theme of the 2017 UABB held in Nantou Old Town—Cities, Grow in Difference—from the perspective of the chief curator. As a concept of cities and a manifesto for action, the article locates urban curation as a site for revitalizing cities and villages. “An Investigation into Self-built Buildings in Urban Villages“ records the observation of the logic of construction and space utilization of self-built buildings in Chisha and Xiaozhou Villages in Guangzhou. Through the lens of the game of space, the team uncovers the formation of buildings and inhabitants' ways of living in urban villages, exploring individuals' right-to-build. “Home Improvement: Community Engagement and Design in Hong Kong“ recounts the architects' unfolding, long-term community engagement, which has used design to improve the living environment of tenants with limited lease, budget, and area in subdivided units. “Urban Village Furniture Exchange Program“ takes the homemade stools of urban village inhabitants both as evidence of everyday life and as a vehicle for bringing the exhibition into inhabitant's everyday life.

Navigating Models of Diversity

Cities, Grow in Difference unfolded through grand and personal narratives as well as collective and individual memories. Onsite practice in Nantou was not only a single case, but also a multidimensional onsite experiment with systematic thinking, a guerrilla tactic that investigated, aced, and hit the target. Living in a city of uncertainties, experimentation is an active move in terms of the SEZ's spirit, even as it is also a passive choice with an eye to improving and resolving urban issues. Looking at the long-lasting single-minded extensive urban renewal model from the perspectives of diverse individuals, the collection of small-scale practices searches for a new equilibrium in the production, evolution, and revitalization of urban village spaces.

“Practice Approaches for the Regeneration of Urban Villages in Shenzhen“ uses case studies to summarize how different policies and stakeholders have shaped urban village regeneration. “Super Messy: Mapping Nantou Old Town“ uses small everyday objects to explore the hidden logic of the messy phenomenon of urban villages and its imbrication with globalization. “Nantou Milk Tea Shop: A Pop-up Shop Based on Social Design“ is a social design practice that intervenes in an urban village to empower tenants. “Bike-Table and Street Life“ incorporates the visual language of urban villages into the design and production of urban village street furniture. A third-party restoration project of a century-old house, “House 17: A Counter-narrative of a Globalized City“ utilizes the extended local social network of the urban village to generate new forms of social relationship. An unfinished building rehabilitation project by invited architects, “Nantou Playground: The Urban System and Nantou Spirit“ experiments with limited interventions, speculating the policies and interests behind the spatial production of specific urban villages. Although it became an unrealized project, Nantou Playground has significance as the most radical initiative in 2017 UABB. A project that extended beyond the Biennale, “Story of Orchard City: An Intervention Experiment on Design“ promotes the reconstruction of social relationships through social interactions that are designed to stimulate engagement with public space making. “Behind an Exhibition: UABB Fieldnotes“ narrates the mediation process between introducing concepts and fulfilling demands in UABB interventions.

Practice for the City

Within the SEZ context, URBANUS is a practitioner of new concepts, testing new models. They are unconventional and unorthodox in their ideology and action. Growing along with the SEZ, and grounded in the urbanity and sociality of architectural practice, URBANUS confronts urban issues and intervenes in the city fabric through multi-dimensional approaches, including urban research, architectural design, and public art. The experience of 22 years of research and practice in urban villages has resulted in the concomitant development of propositions and strategies. Yet the constant idea has been to recognize individual values in the urbanization process and appreciate the diversity of urban villages in future cities. We hope to initiate public discussion through these insights.

Via the EXPO 2010, “Shenzhen, Frontier for China Dreams“ introduces Shenzhen to the world through the revitalization of Dafen Village. “Baishizhou Five Villages Urban Regeneration Research“ proposes an unconventional spatial strategy for large-scale redevelopment in the post-urban-village era, synchronizing inevitable spatial upgrades and social improvement. “Hubei Research: Image and Imagination of the City“ reviews public debates about demolishing an ancient village in the city, and discusses the concomitant cultivation of local culture and a sense of urban belonging. The essay, “Toward 'Cities, Grow in Difference'“ inspects ideas about and implementation of Nantou Old Town regeneration, once again calling for coexistence through diversity in the post-2017 UABB era. “Architectural Delirium: URBABUS, Their Practice, and the City of Shenzhen“ locates the context and impact of URBANUS' interventions in urban villages over time. “Ongoing City/Village Initiative“ introduces the improvement project of six villages in Longgang District, highlighting multi-actor participation in comprehensive remediation and putting forward a prototype for a paradigm of City/Village Coexistence.

Urban villages have played a substantial role in the rapid urbanization of Shenzhen, facilitating issues of space, economic, social, and culture. Over the years, Self-built urban villages have been referred to as “urban cancers” while demolition and redevelopment become the only main renewal model. URBANUS has started the study of and practices in urban villages since 2005. In 2006, URBANUS published the book Village/City City/Village exploring alternative renovation strategies in addition to demolition and redevelopment with research proposals of four urban villages in Shenzhen. The curation of the Shenzhen pavilion at the Urban Best Practice Area at the 2010 Expo showcased Dafen, an urban village as an local urban development paradigm. The preservation research of Hubei Ancient Village by URBANUS started in 2011, which led to the “Hubei 120 City Public Plan” initiated by URBANUS together with practitioners and scholars in Shenzhen. In 2019, Hubei Ancient Village was included in the first batch of the Protection Catalogue of Historical Areas in Shenzhen. Beginning in 2016, Nantou Old Town Conservation and Regeneration became one of URBANUS’s research and practice focus. In the meantime, URBANUS curated “Cities, Grow in Difference”, the 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (2017 UABB) in Nantou Old Town.

In recent years, the significance of urban villages has been recognized that it was regarded as the “urban organ.” The renewal policy has shifted to comprehensive remediation. Inclusive and diverse urban villages are the alternative paradigms against the unitary and homogeneous city. Facing such a pressing reality, Urban-village Coexistence attempts to provide a comprehensive, multi-layer, and multi-perspective narrative by elaborating on the experiment at 2017 UABB and summarizing years of research and practice conclusions. It is the hope that at the pivotal moment of Chinese urbanization, the book serves as an agent to gather the voices of different people, and to promote an understanding of urban concepts that explore a diversified urban village regeneration model for a co-existing urban future.
